### Asos Hackers Reach Customer Profiles Through Personalisation Platform

Asos has [confirmed that attackers took far more customer data than it first disclosed](https://www.silicon.co.uk/cybersecurity/asos-customer-data-631835?ref=ftw.pi.tv), after app users around the world received a push notification headed “ASOS HACKED” on 6 October. The message came from a group calling itself Xuanye Group, which claimed to have compromised the retailer’s Snowflake data instance and demanded contact via Telegram. Asos says the attackers impersonated a trusted contact to obtain an employee’s login, then used it to reach third-party platforms the business relies on.

The hackers [told the BBC](https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c3zxjdw5ywgpo?ref=ftw.pi.tv) their route in was Simon AI, a customer personalisation platform built on Snowflake. Asos first described the exposed data as basic contact details. Its 8 October update widened the list to names, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, dates of birth, customer numbers and in-app search history, though payment cards and passwords were untouched. The group has reportedly demanded a ransom, and Asos shares fell by double digits before partly recovering.

***Why it matters:*** The weak point was the marketing stack, and that should worry every brand building AI personalisation. Retailers have spent years piping customer data into CRM, personalisation and AI tools, each with its own logins and its own vendor. One phished credential opened the layer holding birthdays and search histories, and the attackers were able to message 17 million customers through the Asos app itself.

Asos also made the damage worse with its first statement. Calling the data basic, then expanding the list two days later after the BBC had seen samples, cost more trust than a full account on day one. Ask your security team how many vendors hold a live copy of your customer profile, and who last reviewed their access.

### ChatGPT Adds Virtual Try-On to Its Shopping Results

OpenAI has [added a Try On button to ChatGPT’s shopping results](https://www.techrepublic.com/article/news-chatgpt-virtual-try-on-shopping-favorites/?ref=ftw.pi.tv), so users can see clothing and accessories on themselves before they buy. Shoppers take or upload a selfie or full-body photo, and ChatGPT generates an image of them wearing the item using ChatGPT Images 2.5, its latest image model. The feature also works beyond ChatGPT’s own listings. A user can upload a screenshot of any retailer’s product page and ask to try the item on. A new Favorites library saves products and try-on images, and ChatGPT keeps a user’s reference photos for future try-ons until they delete them. OpenAI announced the global rollout across web and mobile on 1 October, naming no retail partners and publishing no usage figures.

And it can provide counselling for when the jeans don’t fit.![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/f8/72/f872d3dc-1133-4876-98e5-c715db101f11/content/images/icon/favicon-fad0e6f8-2d70-4879-bc10-b68fddea5632.ico)B&TMelania Watson![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/f8/72/f872d3dc-1133-4876-98e5-c715db101f11/content/images/thumbnail/chatgpt-try-on-feature-b3f70c02-103b-4968-ba49-789cc2de78fd.jpg)](https://www.bandt.com.au/chatgpt-goes-after-fashion-dollars-with-new-virtual-try-on-feature/?ref=ftw.pi.tv)

***Why it matters:*** Google and Snapchat have offered try-on for years, so the screenshot feature is the real news. Brands have paid try-on vendors to lift conversion on their own sites. ChatGPT now offers a version of it for any garment from any retailer, without the retailer taking part or supplying product data. That pulls one more reason to visit a brand’s site into OpenAI’s app.

The weakness is fit. A generated image shows how a colour or silhouette looks on you, not whether the size works, and size is what drives fashion returns. When an image built from a screenshot misrepresents a garment, the return lands with the retailer, not OpenAI.

### Constructor Adds Stripe Checkout Inside Its Onsite Shopping Agent

[Constructor](https://constructor.com/?ref=ftw.pi.tv), the search and product discovery vendor used by Sephora, The Very Group, Monica Vinader and White Stuff, [has launched Agentic Checkout](https://retailtechinnovationhub.com/home/2026/10/4/constructor-claims-a-first-as-it-launches-agentic-checkout-solution-powered-by-stripe?ref=ftw.pi.tv), which lets shoppers pay without leaving its onsite AI assistant. Shoppers describe what they want in natural language, ask product questions, get recommendations and then pay with Stripe’s Link wallet or other methods inside the same conversation.

Checkout sits in two Constructor products: the AI Shopping Agent, which handles open-ended requests, and the AI Product Insights Agent, which answers questions on product pages. Constructor claims to be the first to put Stripe-powered checkout inside an onsite shopping agent and plans to extend it across more of retailers’ sites later this year.

***Why it matters:*** When Walmart dropped in-chat checkout after weak conversion, we argued that AI may drive discovery but brands still own the sale. ChatGPT’s try-on button shows OpenAI moving further into discovery.

Constructor’s approach keeps the agent on the retailer’s own site, with the brand holding the customer, the payment and the data. That is the right instinct, but fashion shoppers rarely struggle to pay. They struggle to find the right item in the right size, and a checkout button at the end of the conversation does little if the agent fails earlier. Retailers should ask Constructor whether agent conversations convert better than filtered search before they switch this on.

After Asos' news this week, they should also ask who else gets access to what shoppers type into the agent.
